Residential Counselor or Advocate
Make a difference in the lives of survivors of domestic violence and their children

About the Role
As a Residential Counselor at Abuse Counseling and Treatment, Inc. (ACT), you’ll provide compassionate counseling, advocacy, and support to survivors and their children living in our shelter. You’ll be a vital part of their journey toward safety, healing, and independence—while working in a supportive, mission-driven environment.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide crisis intervention, individual and group counseling, and case management for residents and their families.
  • Support clients through shelter admissions, safety planning, goal setting, and housing resources.
  • Answer and respond to hotline calls, offering immediate support, safety planning, and referrals.
  • Collaborate with staff and community partners to ensure seamless support for clients.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential case records in compliance with funding and state requirements.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to a positive, supportive workplace.

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience working with survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, or homelessness preferred.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to remain calm in crisis situations.
  • A compassionate, team-oriented professional who can work independently and collaboratively.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license and auto insurance required.

  • Thursday – 10:30pm to 7am
  • Friday- Off
  • Saturday -Off
  • Sunday – 2:30pm to 11:00pm
  • Monday – 2:30pm to 11:00pm
  • Wednesday – 10:30pm to 7am

SEXUAL ASSAULT NURSE EXAMINERS

The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) is a registered nurse who has completed the requirements set forth by the International Association of Forensic Nurse to become a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE). The Forensic Nurse will provide timely, non-judgmental, compassionate care to the sexual assault client. This may include a medical-forensic exam, prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, photographic documentation, referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up support, and participation in legal proceedings. The SANE is expected to follow protocols established by the Medical Director and/or the Rape Crisis Center Director and policies of Abuse Counseling and Treatment Inc.

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Job Functions:

  • Respond to a call within 10 minutes, and to the facility within 1.0 hours of the initial hotline call.
  • Perform a complete medical and forensic examination.
  • Explain all options available to the patient so that he/she can make informed decisions.
  • Collect evidence at the patient’s request, guided by the history given.
  • Document detailed injuries accurately with support of photographic evidence.
  • Maintain chain of custody to include evidence collected and the forensic medical records and adhere to release policy.
  • Maintain professional standard including patient and medical record confidentiality.
  • Administer appropriate medications per standing order protocols.
  • Provide testimony as a fact or expert witness when subpoenaed, to any cases performed while with ACT and coordinate with attorneys during judicial process.
  • Assess client needs, provide crisis intervention, and assist in safety planning.
  • Adhere to departmental polices related to the care of sexual assault patients.
  • Work collaboratively with program advocates, law enforcement and other community stakeholders

Requirements of Contract SANE Position Applicants:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a minimum of an ASN Registered Nurse.
  • At a minimum, taken and passed the 41-hour Adult SANE online class given by the International Association of Forensic Nurses, or its equivalent.
  • Have an active Florida RN license with no restrictions.
  • Must live within one hour of the Rape Crisis Center.
  • Have at least two years of direct patient care nursing experience preferred.
  • Maintains CPR license and Auto Insurance.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Pass a criminal background check and Drug test
  • Adhere to all requirements of the job description/contract.
